An AS-i slave is basically the distributed I/O terminals (modules) of a programmable controller (PLC). The AS-i slave recognizes data bits (DO) transmitted from the master and returns its own data (DI) in response.
Most conventional I/O terminals have 16 or more inputs and outputs. This has caused extra I/Os, and resulted in many unused I/Os. The AS-i slave is advantageous as shown below because it distributes control with a small block of four I/O points per slave.

Enables more efficient I/O use by eliminating extra inputs and outputs. |

Eliminates the need for many sensors of different cable lengths in distributed control because slaves are positioned close to the sensors. This ensures more efficient management of inventory and ordering. |
Various AS-i slaves are available from a number of AS-i device manufacturers; such as motor starters, multi-layer indicator lamps, and operator panels as intelligent nodes, as well as digital, analog, and air valve slaves.
A variety of enclosure ratings, such as IP67 (waterproof, connector connection), IP40 (dustproof, connector connection), and IP20 (terminal connection), are available to fit operating conditions. |
